New York Reviews

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows!

Time Out New York wrote a preview for the Mercury Lounge show: “talented multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein, who makes an intriguing amalgam of pop and classical music.”

Photographer Kyle Dean Reinford took some portraits of me downstairs at Mercury Lounge before the show, and wrote a nice review in his KDR Gives You 5 weekly music newsletter. “Really gorgeous, slightly dark songs…. and his live show was just as intriguing.”

Big Ugly Yellow Couch instagram: “glorious is the only word that can be used to describe @hemerlein”

DJ Elhaam interviewed me live on her Guilty Pleasures show on East Village Radio.

Thanks to Sara Schaefer and Scott Moran for having me perform at their weekly comedy variety show Hot Dang! at UCBeast!

Interview with Morgunbladid for Iceland Airwaves 2011

Here’s a great interview with Matthew in Iceland’s national newspaper Morgunbladid for his 2011 Iceland Airwaves performances. The front page headline reads “Compose pop music with professional-tionally to taste” (according to this online translator). Thank you, Morgunbladid!

September Residency at The ACE Hotel-NYC

Ace Hotel

This september I play every Sunday (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th) at 10pm. It’s free and in the lobby. There are candles, a huge american flag, nice looking people, and the sounds of clinking glasses and chatter mixed with violin. I’ll play some different stuff each time to make it interesting for all parties involved. I sort of feel like this women below when I play, since there is no stage and it’s a bit of an odd place to have a show; naked and strange.

Michelberger Mystery Festival

Michelberger Mystery Festival

I was flown in to play this secret show at The Michelberger Hotel in Berlin and it was an awful lot of fun. The other bands that played were The National, Aloe Blacc, Dear Reader, Scott Matthew, My Brightest Diamond, BOY, Wye Oak, Hauschka, Heather Broderick and Eliot from I Blame Coco. It was one of the more fun weekends in recent(or non-recent memory) and the hotel itself is timeless, hip, and homey all at once. I then went and played shows in Cologne, Hamburg, and Brussels and it was all great fun! The golden wheel-barrown was part of the backstage refreshments and they also had a mariachi band at the very beginning as well!

New HRC Shirt designed by “Alex and Chloe”

As the tides of support for marriage equality turn across the country, the Human Rights Campaign unveils its newest collaboration with Los Angeles-based designers Alex & Chloe. Following the success of last year’s collaboration, Alex & Chloe has done it again – creating a special 500 piece limited-edition white version of its best-selling “Bleeding Heart” T-shirt in support of marriage equality.

In celebration of this limited-edition launch, HRC and Alex & Chloe are proud to offer an exclusive download and video premiere of “Luminescent Braid” by musician and activist Matthew Hemerlein. A straight ally, Matthew has dedicated his new song to all LGBT Americans denied the privilege and benefits of marriage.

On both state and federal levels, the Human Rights Campaign is working to achieve marriage equality. By supporting state leaders and mobilizing HRC’s members in support of marriage and relationship recognition initiatives across the country, public support for marriage equality has reached historic highs, tremendous gains have been made and full equality is within reach. Protections once only available to married straight couples including hospital visitation, Social Security benefits, family leave, estate tax exemptions, pensions and health insurance benefits are steadily becoming standards for LGBT couples across the country.

Part of HRC’s designer collaboration series, Alex & Chloe join a long list of designers including Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis, Christian Siriano, Heatherette, Nike and American Apparel all committed to pushing equality and fashion forward.

Dave Adams and I went to Bali, Cambodia, and Singapore and we made this music video. It was a really exciting time and I loved all the places we went to as well. Check out more of Dave’s work at RunRiotFilms.com and big thanks as well to Chris Tuss for working his magic in the editing room!
